What to Expect at Your USCIS Interview

When you attend your marriage-based green card interview, here’s what typically happens:

  1. Check-In & Oath

    • Show your appointment notice, ID, and go through security.

    • You’ll be sworn in under oath to tell the truth.

  2. Review of Application

    • The officer goes through your I-130 and I-485 to confirm details.

    • They’ll check for consistency with your submitted forms.

  3. Marriage & Relationship Questions

    • Officers ask about your relationship history, how you met, your daily routines, family, and future plans.

    • If needed, you and your spouse may be questioned separately.

  4. Document Review

    • You’ll be asked to present supporting evidence of your marriage.

    • Examples: joint lease, bank statements, insurance, photos, tax returns, affidavits.

  5. Security & Background Questions

    • Officers will review standard admissibility questions (e.g., criminal history, immigration history, prior marriages).

  6. Decision

    • Sometimes you receive a decision at the interview.

    • In other cases, USCIS mails the decision within weeks.

Important: Even couples with strong documents can face delays or denials if their answers are inconsistent or nervous. That’s why preparation matters — practicing with an attorney helps you stay confident and ready.
