What to Expect at Your USCIS Interview
When you attend your marriage-based green card interview, here’s what typically happens:
Check-In & Oath
Show your appointment notice, ID, and go through security.
You’ll be sworn in under oath to tell the truth.
Review of Application
The officer goes through your I-130 and I-485 to confirm details.
They’ll check for consistency with your submitted forms.
Marriage & Relationship Questions
Officers ask about your relationship history, how you met, your daily routines, family, and future plans.
If needed, you and your spouse may be questioned separately.
Document Review
You’ll be asked to present supporting evidence of your marriage.
Examples: joint lease, bank statements, insurance, photos, tax returns, affidavits.
Security & Background Questions
Officers will review standard admissibility questions (e.g., criminal history, immigration history, prior marriages).
Decision
Sometimes you receive a decision at the interview.
In other cases, USCIS mails the decision within weeks.
Important: Even couples with strong documents can face delays or denials if their answers are inconsistent or nervous. That’s why preparation matters — practicing with an attorney helps you stay confident and ready.
